Developing local pilgrimage routes

to encourage purposeful walking to places perceived as sacred or special

Welcome to the Eastbourne Pilgrimage Project

Our aim is to encourage the art of walking through our wonderful local landscapes with a special intention.

People of all faiths and no faiths are welcome!

We are discovering old pilgrimage routes that connect with Eastbourne and developing new ones.

We are sharing this knowledge with all.

Our project was inspired by the visit of Sir Tim Smit of Eden Project International to Eastbourne in September 2020 to help launch the Eastbourne Walking Festival in that same month. During that visit he suggested the concept of an 'Eastbourne Camino' that would help promote the practice of pilgrimage walking through the Eastbourne area, a landscape incredibly rich in both cultural and spiritual heritage as well as diverse and  spectacular nature.

No sooner had we started on this project than we experienced a serendipitous moment of synchronicity when we discovered that the British Pilgrimage Trust had already thoroughly researched an ancient pilgrimage route from Southampton to Canterbury, called the Old Way, that passed through part of what is now Eastbourne Borough! We are currently building a strong relationship with the British Pilgrimage Trust to make the Old Way a part of the yearly Eastbourne Walking Festival, an intrinsic part of the evolving Eastbourne Camino, and an inspiration for local people to create their own local pilgrimage routes.
